Centria has developed options to integrate smart technologies directly into work wear garment for enhancing safety for workers and protecting them from the hazardous environment.

To integrate technologies, the 3D printing method was introduced, which has potential in customization of large-scale protective textile material production. This technology is cost-effective, material efficient, agile, several materials can be combined in one-step process and therefore can be utilized in integrating electronics into smart textiles. It is also possible to print complex geometries and models on fabric, which are not possible to design with traditional 2D printed methods.


Encapsulation of electronics was performed printing the base layer of the TPU and PLA, placing electronic components and overprinting with the same polymer layer, design of 3D print is made based on the size of the electronic components encapsulated. TPU was used here as protective material, especially for industrial work wear. The system includes different wearable sensors and software to track the location, also measure the temperature, air pressure, other options are also available to add. This is thin, small coin cell battery-powered wearable system, which has Bluetooth technology for transmitting and receiving the signal from more than 10 meters distance. It updates automatically every 10 seconds. The top and bottom layer of encapsulation provides the mechanical resistance and protective coating from the influence of environment and it is washable up to 75°C temperature in compliance with ISO standard.

According to the tests results, the final product fulfills the industrial protective work wear standards.

Antenna Printing

  • since the filament has low conductivity, reducing the size and thickness of the antenna compared to the original sample resulted lower performance. However, with respect to the size and thickness of new antennas the performance is satisfactory.
  • The presented designs offer uniform performance in whole UHF band.

Mesh Technology

Location tracking inside the building is possible thanks to mesh technology, piloting by Centria  together with Wirepas. Technology allows an unlimited number of nodes to be connected to the internet through a single sink (gateway). It is possible to transmit signals in both ways and data can be remotely controlled from the server. The advantage is that it functions properly without any other interception from surrounded electronic devices. SWW partner Ruuvi Innovations is developing suitable node configuration for the end user. Centria with the partners will test and demonstrate the whole system in laboratory and later on in the industrial environment.

This latest technology simplifies not only the operation of the location tracking system, but also contributes significantly to the supply chain management.
